Introducing new leaders at the Malvern College family of schools

11 October 2021
Eamonn Mullally and Iain Ruck

As a family of schools Malvern College International is very proud of the exceptional talent we attract for posts at all levels, not least so for Heads of Schools; this year we are delighted to welcome Dr Tim Jefferis and Mr Iain Ruck to the Malvern Family as Heads of Malvern College Switzerland and Malvern College Qingdao respectively.

As a senior leader with great insight into the essence of a British boarding school education, Dr Tim Jefferis is the ideal candidate to become the founding Headmaster of Malvern College Switzerland and to oversee the development and growth of the newest member of the Malvern College Family of Schools. Dr Jefferis brings with him extensive experience of boarding school education, joining us from his role as Senior Deputy Head at Harrow International Bangkok and prior to that, senior roles at Oswestry and Uppingham Schools in the UK.

Tim is joined by his wife Jo in Leysin where they have already made the most of the spectacular landscape which surrounds them, taking on challenging hikes and bike rides around the mountain environment. In true Malvern style, Tim has already started to excite the pupils with talk of a community-sponsored bike ride from Malvern, UK to Leysin in Switzerland, which will more than make up for the planned ride from Bangkok to his home in North Wales which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

Malvern College Switzerland has been a home away from home for its first pupils for just over a month now and Tim has been fundamental in the set-up and establishment of our seventh international campus. Tim recently commented:

“Just over a month into my new role I remain as excited about the project as I was when first offered the position. We have started with a fantastic group of teachers – all of whom have embraced the pioneering spirit required in a start-up.

Every day, as I throw open the windows of my office, I am reminded of what a privilege it is to lead a school in these surroundings. We are young, but the route ahead is spectacular.”

Colleagues in Qingdao are excited to welcome Mr Iain Ruck their new Headmaster. Iain takes up post as Malvern College Qingdao enters an exciting phase of its development, with preparations already underway to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the school, which was founded in 2012 and now hosts nearly 1000 students in its boarding school environment, in the shadow of the Laoshan Mountains in China’s Shandong province.

Iain comments: “It is an honour to work for a family of schools that truly values the holistic development of their pupils and places pupil well-being at the forefront. This is of real importance to me and something I am looking forward to supporting at MCQ, alongside the already outstanding academic and co-curricular programme.”

Despite the current travel restrictions, Mr Ruck is no stranger to China as he previously worked at The British School of Guangzhou, where he held various leadership positions, including  Head of School, during his eight year tenure. Mr Ruck credits his time in Guangzhou for his love of China, which was the motivation for applying for his new post.

Iain will be joined in China by his wife Louise, where they both hope to be able to continue exploring the country, as well as enjoying the culture and warmth of the people.

All the team at Malvern College International and the wider Malvern family wish both new Heads the very best of luck with in their new roles and we very much look forward to working with them in the coming years.
